I’ve been discovering quite a few bands thanks to David Chalé’s Youtube channel. The latest is one from Spain, his homecountry, so that is definitely more exciting.
The name of the band is Smoking Room and it was active between 2002-2004, the years when I got into indiepop. I notice that they had released during those years a few CDRs and a tape on a label called Afeite el Perro. I remember this label. I had bought a Bicicross mini CD back then, which actually inspired Cloudberry Records. How cool.
The band was formed by Javi, María and Pablo. Pablo and Javi continue making music under the guise of Pablo Prisma y las Pirámides. María was Javi’s girlfriend back then, not sure if they continue to be together of course. It’s been a while.
The first release of the band was “Adios Navidad” which was recorded by Rodrigo, Pedro and the band at the living room of María’s parents in July of 2003. This CDR was an album of 11 songs: “Celeste”, “Tu Cabeza es de Cristal”, “Oslo”, “Júpiter”, “He Envenenado a tu Perro”, “Donde el Sol”, “Emilio Ya No Está en Finlandia”, “Ikuko”, “El Hombre que Vuela”, “Idiomas (Para Viajeros en el Tiempo” and “El Lugar Más Triste”. David Mohomo played bass on “Oslo” and someone called Damián the trumpet on “Ikuko”.
In the summer of 2004 the band recorded “Inaudito”. This was an EP CDr that was recorded at Pablo’s house and also in the rehearsing room of the band Ensaladilla Rusa. The record included 8 songs: “Inaudito”, “Kryten”, “Chica Varicela”, “Big Star”, “Superfeo”, “Sin Oxígeno”, “El Frigopié Ya Vale un Euro con Veinte”, “Un Guante de Carlos XII” and “Monitor”. The same Damián as the other record played viola on “El Frigopié Ya Vale un Euro con Veinte” and someone called Nacho played cups and other noises on “Un Guante de Carlos XII”.
Between 2002 and 2003 the band did other recordings. I guess these were their first ones. They made a tape with these songs and were given to José Afeitaperros, the boss at the label. The songs were “Emilio Ya no Está en Finlandia”, “Idiomas”, “El Hombre Que Vuela”, “Instrumental”, “Donde el Sol”, “He Envenenado a tu Perro”, “Anémona”, “Tu Cabeza Bajo el Mar” and “Pierre Gaston et les Oiseaux”.
In 2010, the label Afeite al Perro would put together all these three releases on a CDR, a compilation of sorts. It was self-titled and had two ducks facing each other on the cover. All of these songs are on Bandcamp.
The only other mention I find by them is a post by the great blog La Página de la Nadadora. The post dates from 2011, from February 16.
Other than that we know that Pablo Prisma had been in many bands. Those include Bicicross, Ensaladilla Rusa, Pablo Prisma y las Pirámides, Prisma en Llamas, Silence is Music and Grosgoroth.
