Today I want to feature a band that I’ve always been curious about. They are quite mysterious to me as they don’t promote themselves much, they had great looking records, and they sound great.

They were active during the latter part of the last decade and hailed from Japan. Not sure why they called themselves Petersfield either.

Back in 2017 I was in touch with one of the band members, Hiroyuki Tomita, from whom I bought three records, their “Anorak Girl” 7″ that was released in 2015, a split 7″ and the album “A Girl Like You” from 2017. I notice today that they released two more records afterwards. I missed them!

There is very little info about them online, so hopefully my Japanese friends can help me with more info. Would love to know any other details about them. Starting with band members names!

The first release was the “Anorak Girl” 7″ that had the title song on the A side and “London Weekend” on the B side. This 2015 release was out out by Radio Underground Records (RS002).

This same label released in 2017 the album “A Girl Like You” (RUG025). This album had 10 terrific songs, “Summer Time”, “A Picture of Dorian Gray”, “Creation”, “Afterhours”, “Anorak Girl”, “A Girl Like You”, “Cool Guitar Boy”, “Distant Shore”, “Londonweekend” and “Will You Love Me Tomorrow”.

Then the band released a split 7″ on Neo City Records (NCR001) in 2017. This record had them on the B side with the song “Nostalgie”. On the A side was the Japanese band Flashlights which is also pretty good. Here we find some names, not the complete names, but some names nonetheless. “Nostalgie” was written by Hiroyuki Tomita with lyrics by Fumi. We know then that Tomita, Go and Fumi were on Petersfield.

Neo City Records would release in 2019 an EP titled “Starry Eyes” (NCR002). This EP adds a few members to the band. I notice too that we get the instruments here. So we know Fumi was on vocals and bass, Miki on chorus, Rieko on drums and Miki and Tomita on guitar. The songs on this record are “Starry Eyes”, “There She Goes”, “Fantasy World” and “As Tears Go By”.

Lastly in 2020 the band released yet another split 7″. This time shared with the superb The Clovers. It was released by Big Cat Records (BCR0002) and the song Petersfield contributed was “Afterhours”. This track was recorded at Studio Ichinosuke in Tokyo in June of 2020.

Lastly the band contributed two songs to a 2022 LP compilation titled “Nu Psychic Teen Sounds!” released by the fine KiliKiliVilla label (KKV-128VL). On this record the band had thee songs “I’m Not Sayin'” and “Lazy Sunday”. The back of the sleeve of this record shows the band as trio, one guy, two girls.

And it is that same lineup that I see on a video of a live performance of the band playing the song “Window Shadow“.

And that’s all there is to say about them. I know it wasn’t much, but I hope that I least I am making you discover a very cool band!

Petersfield – Afterhours

Very little is available by this electropop band from France.

Bien was actually the moniker of Pascale Borel. He started this project in 1996 and called it a day in 1999. His three releases came out on the Madrid based label Siesta Records.

Pascale may actually be more known thanks to have been in Mikado. With Mikado she released a bunch of singles and an album in the 80s. But that’s a more known story. I am curious about this short-lived project called Bien.

She also has released many solo records.

Discogs lists some other band members for Bien like  Arnaud Fontanes, Bertrand Lapicorey and Vincent Lapicorey (these last two are brothers).

The first Bien release was the “Balthazar” 7″ single that had the title song on the A side and “Soleil D’Automne” on the B side. This record was put out by Siesta (SIESTA 43) in 1997. The songs were recorded by Christophe Chavenon with Vincent Morel as his assistant in Paris in 1997. The design for the sleeve was made by Olivier Legrand.

This same record was released as a CD single that same year. It included a couple more songs, “Oublie-Moi” and “Sunny Side”.

These two songs would be released by Siesta as a 7″ that same year. “Oublie-Moi” (SIESTA 45) came with “Sunny Side” as mentioned.

When it came to compilations the song “Soleil D’Automne” appeared on “Expreso (Otra Recopilación de Canciones de Siesta)” (SIESTA 60) in 1998 and then in 1999 a song called “If (Version)” was included in “Social (Bodies)” a CD compilation released in France by Kung Fu Fighting Recording (FIGHT 001).

Sadly this is all the information there is about these songs and this band. Of course, as I said earlier, Mikado is quite the legendary band and you could find more info about that part of Pascale’s music. But even so it is surprising that about Bien there’s barely anything online.

I believe her last solo record was “Par Ailleurs” in 2015. There are at least 2 more solo releases. Seems that’s what she did after Bien.

Did Bien play live? Were they only a recording project? Anyone has any other details?

Bien – Soleil d’Automne

Floraline released a self-titled album in 1999 on the Minty Fresh label (MF-31). Other than that they appeared on a few compilations. Then it seems they disappeared.

The album is really nice. Has this particular sound of the late 90s, upbeat with electronic arrangements and female vocals that was a bit of a trend during that time. I’m thinking of Super, Syrup USA, Cinnnamon… or of course Komeda and The Cardigans.]

The band was formed by Linda Sharp on vocals, Darren Tablan on keyboards, Jason Winter-Jarnagin on guitar, Jesse Atchison on drums and Abe Burgess on bass. They were based in Atlanta.

As mentioned their album came out in 1999 and had the songs “Just the Way”, “Harmony”, “Morningside”, “Concourse”, “Eighty One”, “I Should Say”, “I Forgot”, “Picture Show”, “Fade” and “Wedding Day”. There are programming credits for the first two songs and the last one for Scott Herren.

The album was recorded and mixed at Kingsize Soundlabs in Chicago though “Just Say”, “Harmony”, “Eighty One” and “Wedding Day” were originally recorded at Microgroove Studios in Decatur, Georgia. The album was produced by Dave Trumfio with Kenny Sluiter as the engineer.

Other album credits include Dave Max Crawford on trumpet and flugelhorn and Paul Mertens on flute and saxophone. Gretchen Dietelhoff is credited for the photography.

Floraline appeared on three compilations. The first one is “You are Here #6”. This CD caame with the magazine of the same name. The song Floraline contributed was “Harmony”.

In 1999 they were on “1999 Summer Rock Campaign”, a Japanese promo sampler released by Rock Records (RCP-5008). On that compilation they appear alongside Cinerama, Broder Daniel, The Aluminum Group, Mojave 3 and more. The songs they contributed were “Just the Way” and “Wedding Day”.

“Get Yer La-La’s Out 2000 Vinyl” was a vinyl compilation released by Minty Fresh Japan (MFJ-2000). On this one they have the song “Wedding Day”. Here they are with top bands too like Papas Fritas, The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group, Komeda or Photo Jenny.

I can’t find any more details or info about the band or the band members. I was able to find many reviews for the album, all giving it lots of positive remarks. But nothing extra to say. Why did they only released one record? Did they record any more songs? What did they do afterwards?

There are many questions. Makes you wonder why so obscure!

Floraline – Just the Way

Fridays are becoming difficult for me to post on the blog, so thinking about switching to Mondays and Thursdays. Let’s see how this goes.

A beadle, sometimes spelled bedel, is an official who may usher, keep order, make reports, and assist in religious functions; or a minor official who carries out various civil, educational or ceremonial duties on the manor.

Here’s a good mystery…

“Too Beautiful” is the name of a 1992 song by a band called The Beadles. It is on Soundcloud on the account of someone whose username is Souvlakiman. That’s not very helpful, right?

There’s some little detail though. It says that this recording was one of the first he did in Birdsong Studio in Lincolnshire.

I have looked for this studio on Google but couldn’t find it. Perhaps it doesn’t exist anymore.

Did the band hail from Lincolnshire too? I’d like to guess if that was the case that the band was from a city that is not too obscure. Perhaps Lincoln, Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Boston, right?

One thing that I notice, as Souvlakiman has uploaded many more songs, is that it seems that he lives in Greece now (maybe that’s why he uses that nickname?). It seems he has played in the island of Lesvos just last year, in July 22, at Alepou Cafe bar in the Eressos beachfront. He adds a name there though, Steve. Maybe that is his name? No last name sadly. Hard to find him this way.

Another set of recordings mention that he is doing a movie about this same beach, Eressos, in Lesvos. The movie is called “O Eressos Mou”. But most importantly he says that he made a song celebrating the promotion of Scunthorpe United. I think it was a good guess then that The Beadles hailed from Scunthorpe then?

Well, and that’s all I could gather about them. No other band members names. No other recordings. Who would know more about this early nineties project?

The Beadles – Too Beautiful

What a curious band name. Especially as they were a five-piece band hailing from Manchester. Was one of them mysterious? Was Steve (vocals), Martyn (guitar and vocals), Julian (guitar), Marcus (bass) or Derek (drums) the mysterious fifth member?

The band was around the late 80s and they never got to sign with any labels. They recorded two demo tapes, between 1987 and 1988, and played many gigs around their home city and the North of England.

They have a Bandcamp with these recordings and that’s what I wanted to share with you all.

You’ll find a collection of songs there titled “Black and Blue: The Demos 1987-88”. The oldest songs from these collection are “Fall”, “Hand of Love” and “Like a Knife” which were recorded at Adventure recording studio in Manchester in August of 1987.

The other three tracks were recorded in May 1988 at The Rectory in Newcastle: “Playtime”, “Black and Blue” and “Let Me Down”.

And that’s all the info that there is about this band. I am hoping as Manchester is a place where I suppose the history of bands is well known and remembered that some fans will share some details about them. Would be good to know more info for sure!

The Mysterious Fifth Member – Let Me Down

Here’s another obscure 7″ in my collection. On the A side there’s “Carnival (Live is a Carnival)” and on the B side there’s “Time (Time is Passing Along)”. The band is called SOS Bikini and they hailed from Belgium. And that’s about all I know (other than the songs are pretty good).

I know the record is from the 80s. So I look on Discogs to find out that the exact year is 1985. The label that put it out was Micronesia Records (MICRON 025-01). This was the band’s own label I think. Other than releases by SOS Bikini there’s another one by a band called Marcou who I have never heard.

The sleeve shows two of the band members on the front, and two other on the back. On the labels we get their last names and first initial, A. Reefs, Ch. Nyssen, G. Roggemans and M. Nettersheim. We’ll have to do some detective work to find out their first names?

The producer of the record is Christian Willems. We get his full name. He had been in a few bands including Abbey Road, Maljean Willems, Smoky Mokes and Transfert.

I would have thought that was the band’s sole release but it seems that in 1996 the band released “Bon Voyage” a CD album on their label Micronesia Records (025-02). This CD has 12 songs, and they are listed from the A to L instead of 1-12. The songs were “Magie”, “Si Jamais”, “L’Étoile Enchantée”, “Belle”, “Dans la Jungle”, “Vous”, “Reste”, “Voyage”, “Elle”, “Ailleurs”, “Des Melodies” and “L’Aventure”. It seems they had switched to French.

There’s another record listed, “The Mysterious Tube”. This one dates from 2008 and was released on CD, same label (025-04). From A to F the songs are “Paradis”, Flying Saucers”, “Crazy World”, “I Remember You”, “Cyber One” and “Rivage”. This CD seem to have been a sampler, but not sure what the intention was. A sampler for radios? For fans? For blogs and music websites? It has never been sold on Discogs, and only the front cover of the record is available.

But here is a great find, a promo video of the song “Time”! It is on Youtube and it tells us that it was made by André Chandelle in 1986.

This video was uploaded by Charles Nyssen. Alright, now we know one of the band members full name. In his account there are two videos (1, 2) called “Yvy Califice Halifax SOS Bikini hommage”. These are live at an event alled Spirit of 66 in Verviers in Belgium. The date? January 1st 2014. Worth checking out. Are the band members all from SOS Bikini?I can see three guys and one girl, could be then! Would be good to know if the band reunited especially for this gig in 2014!

Then I find some sad news. I see that Charly was in a band called The Man Who. They had a Facebook page. There I learn that Charly passed away on June 10, 2018. There’s a post commemorating this date here.

Then I think I find something that may be good for my research. I think it is some sort of compendium or extracts from the Limburgs Dagblad, the newspaper of the province of Limburg I think. Well. it used to be called like that until it merged with De Limburger in 2017. Not it is called as the latter.

There I find a few interesting bits and the names of the band members. I read that the band toured the South of France. The translation I get form Google translate is wonky. I think The Comsat Angels praised them (I also saw one of the band members of SOS Bikini wanting to get in touch with the Comsat Angels in a forum) and they appeared on KRO Rock Temple. Was that a TV programme?

But yeah, the important bit is that SOS Bikini was formed by Allee Reefs on keyboards and vocals, Guy Roggemans on guitar and vocals, Charles Nyssen on bass and vocals and Mare Nettersheim on drums and percussion.

And this is what I found. Quite interesting. Wonder if anyone has more info about them, if the band members were involved in other bands and where are they now.

SOS Bikini – Carnival

This is quite a holy grail for many indiepop fans. The über obscure Ate Guitarists Later that released a wonderful 7″ in the 80s or early 90s.

The 7″ with a sleeve that had a cartoon of some guy looking up had two songs, “Things are Looking Up” and “Magdalene Lane”. Yes, the cartoon makes sense with the name of the song. Very literal.

The back of the sleeve gives a little bit more info. Seems that this was a solo project. All musical chores are credited to Jim Goldolphin. The sleeve is credited to Steve Spear and A. Hall.

The label was Godol Records. And there’s an address in Keyham, Plymouth, Devon, UK.

And that’s all really. I know there’s almost no information about this band/project. But I am hopeful that this post will help find out more details. Maybe someday. Anyone can help?

Ate Guitarists Later – Things Are Looking Up

Leiria is a city and municipality in the Central Region of Portugal. It is the 2nd largest city in that same region, with a municipality population of 128,640 (as of 2021) in an area of 565.09 square kilometres. It is the seat of its own district and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Leiria-Fátima. The city is part of the historical province of Beira Litoral.

Never thought I’d write about a band from Leiria, Portugal, but here we are.

There’s a Soundcloud by the band Phase that has all of their 1996 recordings. They had uploaded it 9 years ago, sometime in 2014 or 2015. Why? Well, it seems they got back in 2015.

But let’s go in order. In chronological order on the stuff I’m finding online.

The recordings are part of a demo called “Dreams of Heaven” that looks like a proper album, 11 songs.  These were “Dream”, “Touch Me Down”, “You Were”, “Waking Up”, “Today Forever”, “Dreams to Heaven”, “Scope”, “Sunshine Smile”, “Sound Logic”, “Butterfly” and the weirdly titled “I Was Fucking Your Sister”.

The band was an important part of their city’s music scene. They were formed by Luís Mendes on vocals and electric guitar, Ricardo Fiel electric guitar and casiotone, Filipe Rocha on drums and vocals and Nuno Filipe on bass.

There was another demo which is not online. It was called “52 Minutes of Your Time” that was released in 2000. From what I understand Rachel Goswell from Slowdive appears on this demo.

After Phase the band members were involved in many projects included Sean Riley & The Slowriders, David Fonseca, Born a Lion, The Allstar Project or Dr. Majick

But as mentioned, in 2015 the band reunited to play at the Beat Club in Leiria, on December 26th. Tickets for that night were just five euros. So cheap.

To find more info there’s a Facebook of the band that was set up in 2014.

There’s a bunch of photos of the band and I find a discography. Thanks to that I track down a discography on Discogs. Four releases all from 2000. Three singles and an album.

The singles were “The Single” a promo CD release on Polydor and Universal Music Portugal that included the song “The Single (Radio Edit Version)” that was recorded at Clarion Studios and Melway Studios in Brighton and Noisy Studios in London. The producer was Darren Allison, who also mixed the tracks at Inovation in London. The mastering was done at Abbey Road in London.

“Get Down” was the second single. It was also a CD release that included just  the title song. Recordings, mastering and mixing happened at the same locations. The one interesting bit here is that there was a brass section for this song, Julian Nicholas played sax, Damon Brown trumpet and Billy Romfit trombone.

“City” was the last CD-single. The information is the same for technical side of the CD. On this song now there is a string section, Maria João Silva played violin, Luis Norberto viola, João Costa cello, Lúcia Costa violin. Adam Blink arranged the strings.

The album “Fifty Two Minutes of Your Time” was the one and proper release by the band. Has a catalog number on Polydor and Universal Music Portugal (157 487-2). Again technical information is the same as in the singles and now we find 12 tracks: “Get Down”, “The Single”, “The Sun”, “She’s a Girl”, “Sorry”, “City”, “Hey Girl”, “Falling Down”, “Mars Babe” (credtis here for Dr. Sarilla nEon for electronics/radiophonics), “Outside”, “Wonderstar” and “God’s Trial”. It is on “Hey Girl” that Rachel Goswell contributes. David Fonseca of the band Silence 4 contributes on the song “City”.

And then they were on a bunch of compilations! I counted 9, all between 1997 and 2002.

“Sunshine Smile” appears on “Noise Sessions” a CD comp released by Garageem (GCD-004) in 1997. Then in 1998 the band contributes “Scope (All I Can Get)” to “Santos da Casa” a CD comp released by Coimbra B (CBEV 00398) and four songs, “Falling Down (On Me)”, “The Sun (Burn to Ashes)”, “(Nice) Wish” and “Sound Logic” to “4×4 (A)Tracção Fatal” also on Coimbra B (CBEV 00498).

“Dream” appears on another compilation, “Cais do Rock Vol. II” in 1998. This was released by LowFly Records (LF 054). Then in 1999 “Falling Down” appears on “OnLeiria” a promo CD comp released by Artes & Leilões (A&L00006). This last one came out alongside the magazine “On”.

Universal Music Portugal would promote their band in 4 different compilations. On 2000s “Nºs 1 O Melhor Do Pop Rock Português” they  include the song “City (I Breathe This Pure Air)”. That same year the big label releases another compilation with the same name and on that one the song “Get Down (Get Down, Get Down)” is the one that appears. Tracklist, catalog number and artwork look different, but not sure why both comps are just called the same.

Then in 2002 the band has “Get Down (Get Down, Get Down)” on “O Melhor do Pop / Rock Vol. 1” and then “Mars Babe” on “O Melhor do Pop / Rock Vol. 2”, both released by Universal Music Portugal.

Universal Portugal believed in the band and a promo video was made for the song “Get Down“.

And that’s all I wanted to share today. Maybe we’ll find more about them soon. Pretty cool to find a band from a small Portuguese city that started small and at some point ended up signing for a big label. They must have quite a story!

Phase – You Were

Have you heard of the Dutch band Ziffels? They hailed from Groningen and were around in the mid-80s making some very nice guitar pop. Maybe you did know them. They were considered the city’s best kept secret. But perhaps if you weren’t Dutch, if you weren’t from Groningen, you missed them.

I have one 7″ by them, the only one they released back in 1987. It had two songs, “Cold Day in Bermuda” on the A side and “Penny Black” on the B side.

The record came out on the band’s own Slurf Records (SLR 1001) and the jacket featured a fun illustration showing a little island, a palm tree, a cruise ship, a shark, and the band members either on a dark cloud or one of them having a good time resting on the beach. The back side of the sleeve is less fun, band name and “Penny Black” on white over black background.

There’s no info about the band sadly on the record but I found that it was produced by Tiemen Smit.

But I am sure I will find more about them.

The first great find is one on Bandcamp. 18 songs! Yes! An 18 song compilation titled “Early Recordings“. All remastered in Studio 77 in Groningen by Frits Vogt. The songs are “Arnold goes to Artschool”, “Dumped”, “Max Day”, “Show a Little Love”, “Baby in a Bottle”, “Let’s Go to the USA”, “Big Fat Love”, “I’ll Try Anything”, “Global Habitability”, “Cold Day in Bermuda”, “Penny Black”, “Sole Thing”, “Red Herrings”, “The Way to Your House”, “The Biggest American”, “Secret Servant”, “Stupidity (live Stadspark)”. These sons seem to be only available digitally.

This same Studio 77 Bandcamp account has more recordings by the band.

There is also a bunch of 1989 recordings by the band that have been compiled under the name “Attic Tapes” as they were recorded in the attic of Villa Volonté. This is their “unreleased” album. But what is Villa Volonté? It seems it is a pub in Groningen that was created in 1983 by the medical faculty! Ah! Right, I should have mentioned that Groningen is a university town.

The songs on “Attic Tapes” are “Caroline”, “Sole Thing”, “Cortina”, “Secret Servant”, “Time Will Tell”, “Don’t Touch Me Now”, “Suckcess”, “Biggest American”, “Working for the Man”, “Dumped”, “Slow Down” and “We Do”.

I do find who were behind the band. Henk Boonstra was on vocals, Spike Boorsma on guitar and vocals, Theo van der Laan on drums, Jose Cutileiro on guitar and vocals and Frits Vogts on bass. The main songwriters were Sipke and Jose.

The band appeared in two Dutch compilations in 1990. The first was on “Let’s Have a Picnic and Barbecue Some Corrupt Not Self-Programming Dee-Jays” with the song “Suckcess” which was produced by Jan Van dere Plas. This was a double LP released by Noet Lachten Records (NOET 10). I had mentioned this comp before when I wrote about the German band Viola Crayfish as they also appear here. Other well known bands on it are The Waiting List, The Nightblooms, The Truffauts and Most Wanted Men among others. The other compilation that featured them was “Groningen 1990 – Een Rock Sampler”. This was comp that as you can guess was a sampler of Groningen bands. On this one the band appears with “The Sole Thing”.

One interesting bit that I find is that in 1987 the band appears in the TV show “Jonge Helden” on the VPRO channel. In 1988 the band gets hype reviews by the music paper Oor.

Also the band gets to play at the Nooderslag music showcase festival in their city in 1988.

I learn too that Sipke was in Les Zazous in 1992. Jose Cutileiro had a good solo career in music as well as a journalist and what is interesting is that he is song of the Portuguese writer and diplomat of the same name. Sadly he passed away in 2020.

And then in 2016 the band reunited. They even had a website but it doesn’t work anymore.

The reunited band would release a self-titled album in 2020. They would use their own label Slurf Records (SLURF002) to release this record on vinyl. 9 songs would be included, “The Lion is Awake”, “Lexicon of Cool”, “D-Time”, “The War that Ended Peace” on the A side and “Dusty Memories” (with guest vocals by Marja Kootte), “Out of Nowhere”, “Noise on the Wire”, “Melody Hill” and “Requiem” on the B side. It was recorded  by Frits Vogt at Studio 77 and mastered by Michiel Cornelisse at Studio Blaisdell in Groningen.

This record featured the original members aand it was Fritz and Sipke Boorsma who mixed it. The sleeve design is credited to Spike. While the logo was created by Myrthe Heuzinveld and Erna de Bie. The liner notes were written by Bill Mensema and the photography was taken by Reyer Boxem.

And since then silence. I suppose this is due to the passing away of José. Understandable and of course it makes me sad to learn it this way.

Happily they have left a good legacy of great songs. So I hope some of you discover and enjoy these tracks. And if you remember them and have mode details please share!

Ziffels – Cold Day in Bermuda

On Irishrock.org we see that they are looking for more information about Lipstick Vogue. They have a photo of them, a four-piece. They knew that the singer’s name was Cathal and that they had taken their name from an Elvis Costello song. They also liken them to REM.

Two other details are interesting. The band recorded a 1988 demo at Windmill Lane. And most importantly two of their songs appeared on the wonderful “Swimming Out of the Pool” compilation released in 1988 by Danceline (DLP 1001). The songs they contributed were “Riversend” and “When Will You”. Were these the songs from their demo?

On this compilation they appeared along a band I had written in the past, The Outpatients. I had written about The Storm too. And even better interviewed So She Said.

Then suddenly a superb find. A Soundcloud account. There’s a bunch of songs and we know that Lipstick Vogue hailed from Dublin.

The songs uploaded are “Malthouse”, “Anywhere but Here”, “Tidal Wave Woman”, “Dreaming”, “Walk Alone”, “Raintown”, “You Think Too Much”, “River’s End” and “When Will You Be Mine?”. One thing I notice is that two song names are similar to the ones in the compilation.

Sadly I can’t find more details about them. The songs were uploaded 10 years ago. And online I can’t seem to find anything that is not about Elvis Costello’s song. So yeah, hopefully an Irish reader or a band member will help us fill in the blanks! Some terrific songs here!
